Assess urgently for acute limb ischaemia, DVT, cellulitis, compartment syndrome, fracture, septic joint, and referred spinal or vascular causes.

- Cold pale painful limb
- reduced or absent pulses
- pain out of proportion
- rapidly progressive swelling
First actions / assessment
- ABCDE first if unwell
- record full vitals and assess perfusion
- clarify site, onset, mechanism, severity, radiation, whether pain is constant or colicky, traumatic or atraumatic, and associated swelling, redness, numbness, weakness, chest symptoms, fever, or back pain
